THE SALT MARSHES LIFE... SEASON 2017

As every year, weather forecasting decides work's organization of salt farmers : cold of winter, number of rainy days and summer's heat influence on concentration of salt in water, circulating in salt production, and then on the harvest's planning. It is valid for salt and for other resources harvesting for Guérande Cosmetics between April and September.

Back in the steps of the season 2017

During winter, sea water covers salt marshes in order to protect them from frost and erosion. This year, even at this time, salt's concentration is still high owing to weak rainfall. Cold of January delays arrival of macroalgae Enteromorpha, the first to be picking.

In spring, lack of rain has allowed salt to crystallize earlier so its harvest started two months in advance ! This drought slows the arrival of Salicornia, which have been developed with rainy days of May. This halophilic plant is particularly interesting in cosmetology because it has many different properties according to its ripeness' stage : we harvest it green in spring and red at the end of summer !

At the end of the season and before rain, it is time for Guérande Cosmetics to harvest its precious Mother-Waters which are incorporated in all skincare products in isotonic dosage, for its remineralizing and osmoactive properties.

The salt marshes life is also rich thanks to the faune which finds refuge in this protected ecosystem and especially numerous migratory birds' species.
